Monasteries
Monasteries On the Holy Mount Athos are several monasteries, their total number by the Typikon of 1783 and since 1924 is 20 legally established. There are only 12 various Skites Kellie and hermitages. The monasteries have almost all the same basic architecture. The outer of the most monasteries is fortress-like complex built, often with towers, bastions and battlements. This was in the past often - but not always - successfully defended against pirate raids. The structure of the monasteries is usually rectangular created, the outer walls, inner courtyards with the Catholics, the monastic churches, which always have a cupola with a cross. In between are the common areas, and the monks' cells. Those who intend to visit a monastery or even to stay there must phone in advance. For occasional visitors is better to inform because maybe the beds are already fully occupied. The code for the Athos is 0377, the numbers of the monasteries are given to the descriptions. Below are the monasteries not alphabetically but according to the monk in the Republic of the usual hierarchical ranking from 1 to 20. This has existed since the 16th Century until today, and was unchanged and confirmed by the Typikon of 1783.

Kellie

Hermitages
In the past years lived on Mount Athos, many migrant or hermit monks in remote cabins or caves and lived in absolute asceticism.
